Day 3:Story Evaluation

Using the recipe for Digital Storytelling, the seven elements, analyze one of these two videos. Go through each of the seven elements and explain how this author either incorporated that element or completely missed the boat. Make sure you comment on ALL seven of the elements.

Journey to the Sun

Doomed Demo

9 comments:

  1. Journey to the sun.
    1. Like a flight attnedant.
    2. Ending cute with popsicle comment
    3. Emotional-not much, just cute
    4. Voice- OK. Bit of emotion. Not just read
    5. Sound track. Nothing
    6. Economy-Too much in too little time.
    7. Pacing OK A bit hard to follow.
Overall, I wasn't really impressed with this one. There were some cute aspects to it like treating us like we were on a flight and the narrator was the flight attendant. But no music and the clips were not really explained all that well or went too fast that I did not get anything out of it.

    Doomed Demo
    1. POV- Band member
    2. Dramatic question-Just a personal story. Nothing really dramatic. I was expecting that maybe it would turn out to be how the Beatles started or something like that.
    3. Emotion-Nothing too much. Just kind of explained very matter of factly how some of the members had their differences and they broke up but it wasn't highly emotional.
    4. Voice-I loved this part. Very interesting to listen to.
    5. Music-Hit it right on the money. It set the mood and followed along perfectly. Best part.
    6. Economy-Perfect. Just said what he wanted. It wasn't meant to persuade, just tell a story and the way it was told, i was compelled to keep watching.
    7. Pacing-Again one of the highlights of this production. The timing and the pacing. And the anitmation.
I really like this one. The clever aniamtion and timing with pictures tearing when they broke up, new drummers, different places. The timing was impeccable and enhanced beautifully with the music. It was a joy to watch although it didn't really have a lot to say.

  2. 1. Point of view : tour guide, Pilot Rocky from the adult
    2. Dramatic Question : What happens on the Journey to the sun/in/with the sun
    3. Emotional Content : missed the boat
4.Voice : Female voice male pilot - Rocky - the inflection was good felt like I was on a ride at Disney "keep all ands feet inside the cart at all times"
    5. Power of the sound track : none used
    6. Economy : shorter is better - did a goog job of saying what need to be said in a short amount of time - closure was also very unique have a popsicle
    7. pacing : Rhythm of the story - never really changed it up same speed talking throughout the entire video.

  3. Doomed Demo
    1. Point of View - band member
    2. Dramatic Question – telling a story – desire, action, realization
    3. Emotional Content – I was interested in how it would end, thinking maybe it was going to turn into a big successful ending.
    4. Voice – good I thought, easy to listen to, good inflection.
    5. Power of sound track – Used well, not through whole movie, just in parts
    6. Economy – I thought the story was told in a precise way
    7. Pacing – I thought it was good, pause with the black screen worked well.

  4. Doomed Demo

Point of View: Told in First Person POV of the lead guitarist and his experience trying to form a band. First person made sense and worked well, but I had to watch it a second time to figure out what his role was in the band.

Dramatic Question: Will the band Method 1 get their act together and be successful? The dramatic question was evident as soon as the narrator described the band. I was anxious to find out what became of them. I was disappointed to hear that they broke up.

Emotional Content: I felt some frustration when two of the members got into a fight, but I felt some satisfaction in the fact that the author had positive memories. The ending was a bit anti-climactic. I didn’t feel strong emotions, but maybe the narrator didn’t either.

Voice: The accent and speed made it difficult to understand. He obviously can’t change (nor should he!) his accent, but he could have slowed down a little and inflect his voice to show more emotion.

Soundtrack: I enjoyed his music in the beginning and at the end, but there were no images displayed during his music. I would have liked to hear it incorporated throughout.

Economy: The explanation of his 1st band seemed unnecessary. That part could have been left out entirely. The rest of the story had an appropriate ratio of narration and images.

Pacing: The fast pace of the story worked well except for at the end. Since he was describing the emotional break up of his band, he should have slowed it down for effect and added morose music.

  5. Doomed Demo
    1. POV- Band member narrating the video
    2. Dramatic question-Will they be famous or not? I liked the fact that it was not something over the top that they toured the world with Britney. Keeping it realistic I think made the video something everyone could relate to.
    3. Emotion- I think the emotion of the narrator's voice and the use of some of the graphics helped to bring the emotion of the stor alive.
    4. Voice- Loved the fact that the narrator had an accent and an energy when speaking. You could hear his passion for his band and music in general.
    5. Music- I think it was spaced perfectly. I would not want to listen to garage band music through the whole video. Bringing a little in here and there made the video.
    6. Economy-Perfect. Short, sweet and to the point. I liked that it was not so "MTV." It kept my focus just long enough. The video before was shorter but felt like it took forever to finsih.
    7. Pacing- Great pacing. Everything hit when it should have. I did not care for the pacing on the prior video.

Overall I think this was the better video of the two. It kept my attention, was fun and a little sassy. This is a video all ages could enjoy watching.

  6. Doomed
    1. Point of view - first person, a personal narrative. Liked the cartoon idea.
    2. Dramatic question - not so dramatic at the end, but the rise to the top and then the fall was okay. With the pacing, it was no surprise that they broke up, you almost expected it.
    3. emotion - I did not think the narrator had too much emotion in his voice, he needed MORE. He was a ROCK STAR! Where is the emotion? Maybe because he is reserved and British?
    4. soundtrack - I liked that it was in the movie in spots, but not constant, it would have been distracting. Not my style of music, but very appropriate to the video.
    5. economy - Good, not too short and not too long. A few details could have been left out and it still would have made sense. Good representation of the quick rise and fall of a young band.
    6. pacing - Was a little frenzied, with the fast music and fast speaking style.
    7. Voice - He speaks too fast. Sounds in some spots like he is trying to fit it in within a certain time. Needed emotion.

Overall, I liked this video better than the first one, not just because it was more professional but because it was more interesting to me.

  7. I loved this digi story. I felt that all of the elements applied even though I am still a little vague on economy. The point of view was definitly that of the narrator. His point of view was that they nearly did something great. The Dramatic question was "Will they make it big?". I like the twist in the story because at one point you think they are going to make it...then they don't. Great build up. I believe the emotional connection is that everyone has had a dream and alot of people have dreams that didn't come true. I felt the narrators voice was good. It had a good tone and flow. It was in sync with the visuals. Although there was no soundtrack, I don't think it was needed. The story flowed fine with the narrative. The pacing was great. The visuals moved in and out with transitions at a good rate...not to fast or slow. There were times the pictures zoomed in quickly to show effect and keep alignment with the narrator. As for the economy if I understand correctly they did a good job. The story was not to long or short. I don't think they could have shortened it and anything longer may have been to long.

  8. Journey to the sun was lacking. It was apparent some thought went in to it, but this person needed more feed back before finishing.

The voice had no infliction and the person spoke to quickly. The pace was to fast to absorb all the information offered. There was no economy as this person spoke endlessly about "stuff". The Sound track was not good. It really should have been re-recorded. There was no "breathing".The emotional content was lacking....what emotion??? Dramatic question, a trip to the sun was evident. The POV was not well established, not sure what it was.

MAn, I hate being so critical, but come on....Julie M

  9. I had a hard time getting the movies to play.... Finally got it!

I viewed both of the videos and definitely connected more with doomed demo. I thought that journey to the sun was missing something. I felt that it didn't quite hit a balance with the seven elements.

The doomed demo I thought had a nice balance of the seven elements and even though I am not interested in forming a band it connected to me as the audience. I couldn't help but make a connection to the narrater on things I have tried throughout the course of my life. Point of view was that of the narrator. I felt the voice and sound dovetailed nicely with the narrator (great balance). I could even sense the emotion in the voice. It didn't seem scripted and fake. The pacing worked well with the voice/music. I thought this was a well thought out video.
